My Experience
Let me tell you my first experience with Flower names in Kannada(ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೂವಿನ ಹೆಸರುಗಳು). I am not sure but probably I was 8 or 9 years old when I visited my aunt’s house for the first time in Karnataka. She had a beautiful garden in the back side of her house that is full of flowers. She had many pretty flowers including marigolds, jasmines and hibiscuses in her garden. I liked jasmine flowers mostly. My aunt saw how much I liked her garden.
She took me close to flowers and told me their names in her kannada language. She called the jasmine “mallige(ಮಲ್ಲಿಗೆ )” and marigolds “chembe(ಚೆಂಬೆ)”. And then I noticed one thing that is the flower names felt really nice to me. I already know their English names but not Kannada names. She said they were part of her culture. That day, I learned how language help us connect with nature. I liked the connection between words and flowers.

For example, roses(ಗುಲಾಬಿ or gulabi) represent love while jasmine (ಮಲ್ಲಿಗೆ or mallige) is known for its sweet smell. My favourite flower is also jasmine or should I say mallige. Flowers often used in prayers, rituals and festivels to bring good energy. You’ll see many flowers that are used for decoration including lotus (ಕಮಲ or kamala) during festivals like Dasara and Ugadi.
